Runnin Rebs and Rebels System
The Central PA Runnin' Rebs System/Philosophy:
The emphasis on the part of a coach’s philosophy will tell the style of play for a particular coach. That emphasis will let the players know what is important to the coach, and thus they will be more motivated to improve on that aspect of the game (Morgan Wootten, one of the most successful high school basketball coaches of all time, 1992). If a coach emphasizes defense, then the players will work harder on defense. The same can be said for rebounding, etc. Without an emphasis in a philosophy, the players will not know what is the important aspect needed for winning on each team (Green, 1999).
In our "Runnin Rebs System" we believe in continually teaching fundamentals. The focus will be on individual improvement by structuring our practices around conditioning, speed training, multi purpose drills and individual drill instruction. Playing time at the next level, Jr. High, High School, or College is never guaranteed. It is critically important that players work diligently on their skills and show improvement during their time spent on our team. No spot on this team is guaranteed from season to season or game to game, but all positions will be earned through performance and commitment to the team’s success. Players and parents will need to have a commitment towards working with all players on the team regardless of school affiliation. Our "system" is focused on an up tempo, structured, but reactive motion offense and multiple pressure defenses. The CPA Runnin Rebs will play at the highest degree of full court fast tempo pressure defense that will lead towards a numbered fast break offense. This team will work towards the goal of executing full, ¾ and ½ court presses with the intended purpose of creating turnovers and quick transition baskets. Players will see the importance of position play within the team concept. Player will be responsible for knowing plays based on assigned numbers within the offensive pattern.
1. All Runnin Rebs and Rebels teams will be given the chance to succeed and to be successful. This will mean that winning does make a difference in the development of a successful team and the development of players mentally and physically. Players will learn how to win by winning. Little is learned by players that work only on skills, conditioning, and plays if the outcome is losing. Expecting to win is and should be expected by players and parents or why do we keep score.
2. What the we will expect from every player on the roster though teaching and committed practice time:
* Expect to Win. Doubters don't win. Winners don't doubt.
* Play Hard. Always give your best. All players will show effort towards the goals of pressure defense and a fast break style offense. Mistakes will be made, but effort can be a constant.
* Play with Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm shows the world that you're excited and have a passion for what you're doing. Get excited and enjoy what you're doing when it’s time for you to be in the game and when watching from the sidelines.
* Play Smart. Stay focused and maintains a high level of concentration toward the team’s goals. Understand the reasons for offensive and defensive schemes at different situations throughout the games. Attempt to execute plays and taught skills for the success of the team.
* Never Give Up! People, who won't quit, don't. This is a time for player development and there will be ups and downs during practice, tournaments and throughout the season. Stay focused on the outcome not the moment and you keep moving towards the goal of team and player excellence.
* Be Coach-able. These are the people you want to be around by your choice. Be willing to except change to become a better player and person. The design may differ from other coaches, but sometimes change is need for continued success.
* Always Have a Positive Attitude. Coaches and players will look towards the positive of any situation and strive towards the outcome.
* Don't Make Excuses. Learn to accept responsibility for your actions and move forward for a better result.
* Be a Leader. Leaders are people who show the way and lead by example.
* Always put the Team First during your time on this team! Your team NOW! (CPA Runnin Rebs). Selfish and self-centered players will not stay as members of this team. All players have the ability to play with enthusiasm and hustle and have consideration for their Runnin Rebs teammates, opponents and coaches.
* Work hard in practice. This is the time you earn the right to play during games and achieve your goal of becoming a better basketball player.
What you can expect from the coaches:
• Teach the game - Do the little things well or fundamentals well in order to bring about consistent improvement.
• Create safe environment for the players to Play Hard and Compete in an organized manner! All coaches have PA Act 34 clearances.
• Be mentally tough - minimize mental mistakes and be organized during practice and games.
• Won’t worry about criticism, team affiliation, or gossip and stay focused on the goal of improvement and excellence for players on the team.
• Focus on playing as a TEAM and the team concept. Players will earn playing time based on practice and game performance determined by the coaches.
• Enjoy being a basketball coach!
• Make practice look and be like we want to play during our games.
• Organize and structure practices too better bring about improvement through fundamental drills that are competitive.
• Create aggressive, up-tempo but organized and smart offense play.
• Have Fun! Fun can get lost in the ups and downs of wins and the losses during time spent as a team if you don't concentrate on keeping your focus. Always remembering kids play to have fun not to win championships. Yes they may talk about it, but it’s nothing that won't be forgotten over pizza, soda or fun times outside of the gym. This is not saying that we will not strive to win, but creating an enjoyable experience for all is what will make this a positive experience.
As a coach, we will strive to be precise with instructions, especially when dealing with players of this age. Remembering that players don't have years of experience and probably don't know all of the terminology that we may throw at them. By the way, that is really what we will be doing for each player, teaching, not just coaching. The teaching methods used will be from over 16 years of coaching basketball, years of classroom teaching, attending coaching clinics, methods formed from undergraduate and graduate courses, and playing the game at various levels. All avenues will assist the learning of each individual will be constantly called upon during each practice session and games within the Runnin Rebs classroom on the court.
Parents:
The Runnin Rebs Club invites parents to be silent observers at practice. Many parents want to help but are afraid and uneducated about the system in practice. Some of the best ideas come from parents that have the team concept and fun for all players at the fore front. Parents can be useful tools and supporters if they understand the philosophy of the team and feel a part of the program. Parent’s who view practices and games give great in-site to the process of the expected play. Parents willing to be a part of the Runnin Rebs family can feel comfortable voicing advice or their visions for improvement of the club on and off the court. Parent’s interactions will be a large and welcome part of this team. Please feel free to interact with coaches in a positive respectful manner and all will benefit.
Ten Commandments for Parents of Athletes
Participating on the
Runnin’ Rebs AAU Girl’s Basketball Team
1. Make sure your children know that win or lose, scared or heroic, you love them appreciate their efforts, and are not disappointed in them. This will allow them to do their best without fear of failure. Be the person in their lives they can look to for constant, positive encouragement.
2. Try your best to be completely honest about your child's athletic capability, competitive attitude sportsmanship and actual skill level.
3. Be helpful but don't coach them on the way to gym or on the way back at breakfast, lunch, or dinner and so on. It is tough not to, but it is a lot tougher for children to be inundated with advice, pep talks, and often critical instruction.
4. Teach them to enjoy the thrill of competition, to be "out there trying", to be working to improve their skills and attitudes. Help them develop the feel for competing, for trying hard, for having fun.
5. Try not to re-live your athletic life through your children in a way that creates pressure. You fumbled too. You lost as well as won. You were frightened, you backed off at times. You were not always heroic. Don't pressure them because of your lost pride.
6. Don't compete with the coach. If the coach becomes an authority figure, it will run from enchantment to disenchantment, etc. with your daughter.
7. Don't compare the skill, courage, or attitudes of your children with other members of the team, at least within their hearing distance.
8. Get to know the coach so that you can be assured that his/her philosophy; attitudes, ethics, and knowledge are such that you are happy to have your children under his/her leadership.
9. Always remember children tend to exaggerate, both when praised and criticized by a coach. Temper your reaction and investigate before over-reacting.
10. Make a point of understanding courage, and the fact that it is relative. Some of us can climb mountains, and are afraid to fight. Some of us will fight, but turn to jelly if a bee approaches. Everyone is frightened in certain areas. Explain that courage is not the absence of fear, but a means of doing something in spite of fear or discomfort. The job of the parent of an athletic child is a tough one, and it takes a lot of effort to do it well. It is worth all the effort when you hear your youngster say, "My parents really helped. I was lucky to have the parents I have, in this respect."
What is involved in the commitment to a team?
It is expected that a player will make all the games and practices. There are always conflicts but absences disrupt the team and are unfair to the player’s coaches and teammates time commitment. Communication with the coaches is crucial about these items. A player has to be able to make the Regional tournament and most of the warm-up tournaments. Respect the efforts of teammates and coaches and keep everyone informed when necessary.
What about the time involved? There are at least two practices during the week from April through July. Two evenings a week and a Saturday or Sunday practice could be scheduled. Teams will play in 5 to 6 tournaments on weekends which require some travel.
How are the registration fees used? About 60% goes towards tournament fees and gym rentals. The remaining funds go to insurance, coaches' expenses, tryout costs, uniforms, registration, and equipment.
What other costs are a part of playing? If you are a new player then there is a registration cost of $20.00, any shared cost among your team for any tournaments past the first 5 full tournaments paid for by your registration fees. If your team travels to non-local tournaments or qualifies for Nationals then there are significant additional costs including travel, room and board, etc. All additional costs will be discussed with parents prior to approval.
Why don't I get a full refund if my daughter quits? The money that is not returned is used to help defray costs, coaches expenses, tournament costs, and gym fee’s. It would be unfair for just those families who stay with a team to pay extra if a player decides to quit. Some families may “shop” at various clubs tryouts to determine which is best for their child and have a responsibility to share in those costs. The financial commitment tends to make a player more committed and give importance to that commitment for the season.
Where do we play?
The girls' teams play in a minimum of six tournaments per year. These tournaments often require overnight travel usually within a two or three hour drive of Centre County
. Accommodations and food monies are not the responsibility of the Club. The Club, prior to scheduling, may secure special rates for parents and players and motels and camp grounds if available. We will schedule mostly local tournaments to keep overnight travel to a minimum, but most tournaments will require travel. Over night trips would be normal for the team. All of the tournaments will be in PA and unless organized by the coach and approved by the majority of players.
What is the role of the family?
Parents are strongly encouraged to go with the team to help us with supervision and chaperoning and enjoying the experience. We recognize the priorities of family, religion, and school, and enthusiastically accept its role as a basketball related complement to those important responsibilities and relationships. At the same time we value and respect the benefits of participation in the game of basketball and will continue to treat the game for what it is- a chance for players to have fun, learn to compete and to grow as individuals at the highest level. We will be listing all of the events we enter as dates are set, hopefully before the season begins. We believe our level of commitment to this process will be second to none.
